About the Consortium

Participating ensembles will commission a new 6- to 8-minute Grade 4 band piece called Fearless Canyon.

A few years ago, I read a strategy for overcoming anxiety that I still think about often. In this scenario, you imagine your specific worries placed in the context of the Grand Canyon and see how small they suddenly become.

I always picture a different real-life space, though. I imagine the Rio Grande Gorge near Taos, New Mexico, with its sweeping desert views, a path winding alongside the ravine, a bridge that spans the gorge, and the view straight down from that bridge. Planes soar overhead; birds swoop carelessly into the canyon. In that place, even before I knew of this anxiety trick, it was easy to put worries into perspective.

In Fearless Canyon, players and audience members will experience how it feels to mitigate anxiety with a series of ever-shifting perspectives. Even the largest concerns seem smaller from a bird's eye view, or within the overwhelming hugeness of a canyon itself. This colorful piece will end vibrant, rich, and full.

FAQs

Can I perform the piece in 2021 instead?

You can perform the piece whenever you'd like. Commissioning ensembles have no obligation to perform the piece in 2020.

I can't sign up through the PayPal link below. How can I join the consortium?

I know university ensembles in particular sometimes have inflexible payment requirements. Please let me know if you need a traditional invoice payable by mailed check, a customized PayPal invoice, and/or other information in order to join.

Is the consortium fee refundable?

The consortium fee is non-refundable; please take that into account when you register.

My ensemble is based in California. Can I schedule an in-person rehearsal instead of a Skype rehearsal?

It may be possible to schedule an in-person rehearsal instead of a Skype rehearsal, especially for ensembles in the greater Los Angeles area. Let me know if you'd like to explore this option.

The commissioning members of the 2020 Band Consortium have the exclusive rights to perform Fearless Canyon until December 31, 2020. Beyond that date, conductors have the non-exclusive right to program these works with the commissioning ensembles in perpetuity.
